The U.S. Commerce Department reported that during the third quarter of this year, retail sales via the internet (E-Commerce) eased 1.0% (SA) from +31.9% in Q2'20 as coronavirus lockdowns unfolded. Online sales in Q3, nonetheless, remained more than one-third higher y/y.
The Q3 E-Commerce sales decline compares to a 12.0% rise in overall retail sales (7.0% y/y) during the same period. As a result, E-Commerce sales eased to 14.3% of total retail sales from 16.1% in Q2. By comparison, these shares are up from 10.9% in 2019 and 4.4% in 2010.
Details of the E-Commerce data are not seasonally adjusted. Sales of nonstore retailers, which account for 60% of total E-Commerce sales, remained strong and posted a 4.3% (27.6% y/y) quarterly increase following a 24.2% Q2 strengthening. Motor vehicle sales increased by 16.6% (19.4% y/y). Elsewhere, sales declined. Building materials & garden equipment sales fell 16.6% (+71.0% y/y) and general merchandise store sales were off 13.7% (+55.3% y/y. Sporting goods, hobby, musical instrument & book store sales fell 10.5% but rose two-thirds y/y. Food & beverage purchases weakened 8.1% in Q3 (+161.9% y/y) while furniture & home furnishing store sales were off 3.4% (+49.1% y/y). Clothing & accessory store sales fell 4.1% (+33.5% y/y).
E-commerce sales are sales of goods and services whereby the buyer places an order, or the terms of the sale and price are negotiated over an Internet, mobile device (M-commerce), extranet, Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) network, electronic mail, or other comparable online system. Payment may or may not be made online. Total sales estimates are adjusted for seasonal variation, but not for price changes. They are also adjusted for trading-day differences and moving holidays.

AuthorMore in Author Profile »Prior to joining Haver Analytics in 2000, Mr. Moeller worked as the Economist at Chancellor Capital Management from 1985 to 1999. There, he developed comprehensive economic forecasts and interpreted economic data for equity and fixed income portfolio managers. Also at Chancellor, Mr. Moeller worked as an equity analyst and was responsible for researching and rating companies in the economically sensitive automobile and housing industries for investment in Chancellor’s equity portfolio. Prior to joining Chancellor, Mr. Moeller was an Economist at Citibank from 1979 to 1984. He also analyzed pricing behavior in the metals industry for the Council on Wage and Price Stability in Washington, D.C. In 1999, Mr. Moeller received the award for most accurate forecast from the Forecasters' Club of New York. From 1990 to 1992 he was President of the New York Association for Business Economists. Mr. Moeller earned an M.B.A. in Finance from Fordham University, where he graduated in 1987. He holds a Bachelor of Arts in Economics from George Washington University.
