Consumer confidence in Italy increased in April for the third successive month. The increases, however, have made only a slight dent in the erosion of confidence that took place in 2002. On a seasonally adjusted basis the index was up 0.7% from the previous month but down 9.9% from April of 2002.

Consumer confidence is generally low throughout Europe. According to data published by the European Commission consumer confidence in the United Kingdom, Spain and Italy has been less pessimistic than that of the EuroZone as a whole and of France and Germany in particular. These data are available only through March.
