The ZEW (Zentrum für Europäische Wirtschaftsforschung) financial market survey of institutional investors and analysts in Germany showed an increase in the share of respondents who have a positive view of the economic outlook over the next six months relative to those who have a negative view.. The indicator rose from 0.6 in December to 14 in January, reversing a steady decline since March 2002. The consensus had expected little or no change.

The ZEW indicator has often proved to be an early sign of change in the broader IFO business climate index. Even if the improvement in sentiment is confirmed by the IFO index, business sentiment in Germany remains at relatively low levels.
