U.S. Retail Sales Improve

Total retail sales and spending at restaurants increased 0.4% during April (4.5% y/y) following a 0.1% March gain, revised from -0.2% reported initially. Earlier figures also were revised. It was the strongest gain in three months. A 0.6% increase had been expected in the Action Economics Forecast Survey.

Sales at motor vehicle & parts dealerships increased 0.7% (4.4% y/y) after as 0.5% decline. The increase compares to a 1.6% gain (-3.0% y/y) in unit motor vehicle sales. Retail sales excluding autos increased 0.3% (4.5%) following a like increase during March, revised from 0.2%. A 0.4% rise had been expected.

Spending on nonauto discretionary items was mixed last month. Nonstore retail sales jumped 1.4% (11.9% y/y) after a 1.1% rise. Sales of electronics & appliances gained 1.3% (0.7% y/y) following a 2.2% increase. Building material store sales increased 1.2% (9.3% y/y) after a 1.7% decline. Sporting goods, hobby shop, book & music store sales improved 0.6% (-2.4% y/y) following a 0.3% fall. Restaurant sales increased 0.4% (3.9% y/y) after a 0.2% rise. To the downside were sales at furniture & home furnishings stores which declined by 0.5% (+3.8% y/y) after a 1.5% rise. Apparel store sales also eased 0.5% (+0.5% y/y) on the heels of a 1.9% gain. General merchandise store sales similarly fell 0.5% (-0.7% y/y), the fourth decline in five months.

In the nondiscretionary sector, health & personal care store sales increased 0.8% (0.7% y/y) after two months of 0.7% increase. Food & beverage store sales eased 0.3% (+2.3% y/y) following a 0.7% increase.

  • Prior to joining Haver Analytics in 2000, Mr. Moeller worked as the Economist at Chancellor Capital Management from 1985 to 1999. There, he developed comprehensive economic forecasts and interpreted economic data for equity and fixed income portfolio managers. Also at Chancellor, Mr. Moeller worked as an equity analyst and was responsible for researching and rating companies in the economically sensitive automobile and housing industries for investment in Chancellor’s equity portfolio.   Prior to joining Chancellor, Mr. Moeller was an Economist at Citibank from 1979 to 1984.   He also analyzed pricing behavior in the metals industry for the Council on Wage and Price Stability in Washington, D.C.   In 1999, Mr. Moeller received the award for most accurate forecast from the Forecasters' Club of New York. From 1990 to 1992 he was President of the New York Association for Business Economists.   Mr. Moeller earned an M.B.A. in Finance from Fordham University, where he graduated in 1987. He holds a Bachelor of Arts in Economics from George Washington University.
