With the settlement of strikes at Hyundai Motors and other firms, Korean industrial production rose 3.39% in August. However, as some labor unrest continued into August the level of production in industries other than mining is still below pre-strike levels.
Expectations that September would see more normal conditions have been severely dampened (no pun intended) by Typhoon Maemi, with its heavy rains and winds up to 134 miles per hour that hit Korea on September 13th. In addition to cutting power supplies, the storm damaged ports and shipping.
The Bank of Korea has warned that its forecast of growth of 3.1% for this year may not be achieved.
