U.S. Petroleum Prices Move Slightly Higher

Gasoline prices at the pump improved last week to $2.24 per gallon, up 2 cents from the prior week. Prices were down 24.0% y/y, they were 9.8% above the January low of $2.04. Haver Analytics constructs factors adjusting for the seasonal variation in pump prices. The seasonally adjusted price improved to $2.33 per gallon. The spot market gasoline price improved to $1.45 per gallon, up off the low of $1.28 two weeks earlier.

WTI crude oil costs increased to $45.96 (-41.3% y/y), up from the late August low of $40.73. Prices reached $107.23 in June 2014. Prices fell back yesterday to $43.87 per barrel. The seasonally adjusted price, generated by Haver Analytics, increased w/w to $46.60. Brent crude oil prices improved w/w to $47.23 per barrel but retreated to $45.38 yesterday.

Natural gas prices fell further last week to $2.02 per mmbtu (-47.2% y/y) but rallied to $2.13 yesterday.

Gasoline demand rose 2.5% y/y last week and demand for all petroleum products gained 1.1% y/y. Gasoline inventories increased 6.7% y/y and inventories of all petroleum products rose 9.6% y/y. Crude oil production (input to refineries) increased 1.2% y/y during the last four weeks.
