U.S. Gasoline and Natural Gas Costs Plumb New Lows

Gasoline prices at the pump declined last week to $2.23 per gallon (-27.1% y/y), the lowest level since the middle of February. Haver Analytics constructs factors adjusting for the seasonal variation in pump prices. The seasonally adjusted price weakened to $2.26 per gallon. The spot market gasoline price fell w/w to $1.30 per gallon (-44.4% y/y).

Natural gas prices retreated last week to $2.37 per mmbtu (-34.6% y/y), the lowest price since June 2012, and collapsed to $2.14 yesterday.

WTI crude oil costs eased to $45.39 (-44.7% y/y). They remained down from a $107.23 high in June 2014. Prices declined yesterday to $43.98 per barrel. The seasonally adjusted price, generated by Haver Analytics, fell to $45.44 last week. Brent crude oil prices fell w/w to $48.29 per barrel and eased to $47.41 yesterday.

Gasoline demand rose 3.1% y/y last week and demand for all petroleum products gained 1.0% y/y. Gasoline inventories increased 7.5% y/y and inventories of all petroleum products rose 9.2% y/y. Crude oil production (input to refineries) increased 0.3% y/y during the last four weeks.
