U.S. Initial Claims for Jobless Insurance Tick Higher

Initial claims for unemployment insurance during the week ended October 25 rose to 287,000 (-17.1% y/y) from 284,000, revised from 283,000. The Action Economics Forecast Survey expected 281,000 claims in the latest week. The four-week moving average of initial claims remained steady at 281,000, the lowest level since May 2000.

Continuing claims for unemployment insurance in the week ended October 18 rose 29,000 (-17.7% y/y) to 2.384 million. The four-week moving average fell to 2.377 million, the lowest level since May 2006. The insured rate of unemployment held at 1.8% for the seventh straight week, the lowest level since May 2007.

By state, in the week ended October 11, the insured rate of unemployment continued to vary greatly with North Dakota (0.32%), Nebraska (0.64%), Indiana (0.83%), Ohio (1.03%), Maine (1.05%) and Texas (1.13%) at the low end of the range. At the high end were Maryland (1.82%), Massachusetts (1.98%), Pennsylvania (2.08%), Nevada (2.18%), California (2.23%) and New Jersey (2.69%). These data are not seasonally adjusted.
