Recovery in Manufacturing Activity in the Pacific Rim Widens with Indonesian Report of Sharp Rise
by Louise Curley June 14, 2004

Indonesia reported that, seasonally unadjusted, April Industrial Production in manufacturing was 17.07% above April, 2003. For the first four months of this year, manufacturing production was up 14.94% over the corresponding months of last year.

Indonesia is the seventh Pacific Rim countries to have recently reported data on manufacturing activity for April 2004. The tempo of recovery from the downturn in 2001 has varied among the countries, with Indonesia being the slowest and one of the most uneven. By contrast, manufacturing in India did not suffer a decline in 2001 and has since followed a steadier, if less dramatic, upward trend than that other countries of the region--Malaysia, Thailand, Taiwan, Korea and Singapore.
