Upcoming Revisions to the National Income & Product Accounts (NIPA)

December 8, 2003

By Tom Moeller

· On December 10, the Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA) will release the first set of tables incorporating the 2003 comprehensive revision to the presentation and definitions of line items in the NIPA.

·The reference year will move from 1996 to 2000 and the old constant dollar series will be discontinued. All price and quantity indexes will be provided with 3-decimal precision so growth rates calculated using these data in DLX will always match those provided by the BEA.

· Despite important changes in presentation and definitions, the existing codes in USECON and USNA will remain essentially unchanged. With all of the available tables coded, there have been no code changes. This will mean minimal disruption to spreadsheets and models but users must keep in mind changes in definitions that may require changes to models.
